How to Store and Hang Your Stretched Canvas

Caring for Your Canvas

After your artwork has dried, you can protect it by applying a suitable fixative based on the painting technique used. This helps preserve the colors and texture.

Ideal Storage Conditions

Store or display your canvas in a dry area with minimal direct sunlight to avoid damage. For presentation, hanging the canvas directly on the stretcher bars is a great option, though a frame isn't required. If you're not hanging it right away, cover the canvas with a cloth to prevent dust buildup.

Hanging Options - An Overview

Hanging Without Drilling

  1. Adhesive Hooks: Special adhesive hooks can be used to hang canvases weighing up to 1.5 kg without drilling holes. These hooks stick to the frame and hang from nails, wire, or nylon.
  2. Adhesive Strips: Another option is adhesive strips that directly attach the frame to the wall. This method can handle up to 5 kg per square meter but works best on smooth surfaces. Be cautious, as some adhesives may leave behind a greasy residue over time.
  3. Metal Hooks: Temporary metal hooks can be clipped onto the top stretcher bar, supporting the frame’s weight without needing screws or nails. These hooks work particularly well with MDF frames, which are less sturdy than wooden frames.

Hanging with Nails or Screws

  1. Picture Hangers and Sawtooth Hangers: These are the most common methods for hanging stretched canvases. Sawtooth hangers or picture hooks are nailed or screwed into the top or sides of the canvas frame. You can also attach additional hangers on the bottom corners for better stability.
  2. Screws and Wire/String: For a DIY approach, screws are inserted into the sides of the frame, and a wire or string is looped between them. This allows the canvas to be hung at an angle, ideal for higher placements. The angle can be adjusted by loosening or tightening the string.

Heavy Duty Options

For larger and heavier paintings (over 30 kg), use heavy-duty hangers like flat brackets or rails with screw holes. These can handle greater weight and are ideal for thick frames.
